The existing 2 storey building of the kindergarten – giving home for eight groups - is situated between 11 storey high prefabricated blocks at the Vizafogó housing estate. The original building both in it’s state and infrastructure wasn’t suitable for today’s requirements, so the local council decided to modernize and extend it. There was no need to increase the capacity, the reason for the extension was the lack of space in the rest rooms, changing rooms and the absence of other secondary service areas.
The hallway-changing room has been widened towards the group rooms and these were also extended towards the garden. To the front of the rooms we designed a transitory covered outdoor patio for playing and resting. This connects on both levels to the indoor space and so we have reached our fundamental goal, to ease the deficiency of the upper level rooms cut off from the outdoor space. The two levels are connected through a stair and a slide. By transforming the former entrance and corridor system, the building is now set around a new inner atrium. The façade on the new parts of the building has been covered with timber boards, which is then transformed into lamellas at the patio. Thus the stocky volume of the building opens up under a new roof’s outline.
By preserving and modernizing the original building together with the extension, the kindergarten has got a new different but integral identity. The covered-outdoor spaces wrapped in wooden lamellas are compensating the shut and rigid environment of the prefabricated blocks.
