Törökbálint new Town Hall architectural competition - the plan of Nartarchitects
In the site of the construction the vision of the landscape is carried by nerve cells into the brain. The brain controls, collects and shares information connected to each and every part of the body. Just like this city hall which creates a relationship with the elements of the special landscape, and the same time is responsible for the life of the city both spiritually and economically.
The building site is special, it is surrounded by three different parcels, which are located on different vertical levels. One of them is the hill of the calvary, which hides behind the houses. The other one is a plain site, which is also can not be seen, but is going to be important in the future. And the third one is the main street currently in use, and where the main pedestrian traffic is expected. All the three directions are playing an important role and their relevancy is without any doubt.
Aspects of design
According to our ideas, the city hall is not about the power of authority or hierarchy, but it has to represent the service of democracy, transparency, and the fuctioning of the society, - the human connections and collaborations between of the office, the elected congressmen, and citizens.
During the designing of the inner spaces our main goal was to create a central community center, which is also a complex structure of spaces, where people can connect to each other (suitable for waiting, walking, or personal conversations,) in the name of transparent communication. Also the toilets and informal stands are connected to this place. International and national researches shows that this organisation of spaces increases the intensity and effectiveness of work, due to the stimulation of secondary communications between coworkers.
The surrounding different parcels in the neighborhood define the shape of the city hall, as it lies at the intersection of them, so it is functioning as a connecting element in the shape of a „Y”. Because of this shape it means that there is no main facade, the building shows a unique side to each direction. It is like an object which binds together all the surrounding sites. From the main street we have to go down on a slope on a passage under the building to get into the core of the house, where the main enterance, the hall, and the center of the routes are. The routes divide the public spaces, and the offices located in the three main parts of the „Y” house.
«Lets build our city hall together» movement
The walls are made of reinforced concrete with rock wool lining and covered by reused brick, and mixed stone facing. The source of this materials can be the current and soon will be demolised buildings. Especially bricks and rocks from the old city hall and the other reusable matters collected from the neighborhood.
It is also an option to start a charity movement for the citizens, where they can donate structural leftovers… so as an interesting social experiment, and public event, where they can relate to the process of the building. It can become a part of the towns history, and also enhance the identity of the local people.
