The tomb of Gül Baba and its environment

The tomb with it’s inner garden and the wider environment - the rose garden and Gül baba Street - is a well-graced place of Budapest. However, during the decades, dilapidation became a more and more determining feature in this area. The staying away of visitors and the deterioration of technical conditions reinforced each other in eroding the attraction in the atmosphere of the area.

The program hasn’t stopped at the restoration of technical conditions. The development, started as a result of the cooperation of the Hungarian and Turkish governments, required also the addition of values beyond the restoring program. The task was the thoroughest ever reconstruction of the tomb of Gül Baba, creating spaces for use in the remains of the “Wagner villa” and the comprehensive landscaping of the wider environment.

Arriving from the Turbán Street, visitors can see a composition of landscaped and covered surfaces, and at the same time the statue of Gül baba now has the deserved background. Coming from Mecset Street, the visitor arrives at the Mediterranean public park, consisting of three parts: the garden of the evergreens, the rose garden and the garden of scents. Furthermore, also the flight of stairs leading up from Gül baba Street and the connected oriental terrace have been rebuilt.

The flights of stairs and promenades have been reconstructed and the park is equipped with street furniture. In the evening hours, now there is quality public and decorative lighting, and the considerations of accessibility have also been taken into account properly. Our intention was that this place should receive visitors again in a manner suitable for its importance in history, history of art and tourism.
