Outspread wings – Budapest Airport brownfield real estate development
Béla Bánáti and his office were commissioned by Budapest Airport to prepare a conception plan for a 70 hectare plot of a complex, brownfield real estate development. The buildings form a unified whole and the architects’ aim was to create an urban rather than suburban quality. The architects created a total of seven sites. On plots 1, 2 and 3 there is an industrial park with highly visible, small and medium-sized buildings containing hall-type units, mainly for offices. On the side towards the road there is an elegant zone related to office functions with a landscaped promenade, a stylized lake and car parking. On plots 4, 5 and 6 there is a commercial park with a ‘stop-shop’ style shopping mall and large-scale multi-level specialist stores. On plot 7 there is city supply storage with cross-docking system, a direct train-road connection and loading possibilities. Marketing opportunities deriving from air transport can be exploited with architectural and landscape elements visible from the air.
