Extending the Building of an Existing School
My diplomawork consists of designs of new sections adjoining an existing school building in Pilisszántó. The suplementary building sections offer a prospect of new, alternative educational opportunities. There are three new functions: a workshop aiming at practical education, a house for drama-presentations and human studies, and a third one suitable for carrying out natural observations. The function of the new extensions is to outline a contrast to the present institution, thus making it more complete.
The three buildings relate to the steepness of the slope in different ways. The workshop is below ground level, whereas the drama house lays right on the ground, and lastly the observation house rises above ground level. These different relations to the hill support the functions of the buildings: the opened space in front of the workshop is designed for practical purposes and since it's only covered with a roof, it is easy to carry out practical tasks outside.
The space of the drama-presentation house is divided up into stairs as it follows the ground, which gives you the impression of being in a theater auditorium, and the steepness of the floors contributes to the diversity of the drama room. The observation house on the very top of the site offers a broad view of the neighborhood and is therefore suitable for observing nature.
The usage of materials for the buildings are adjusted for the local resources, but the structures differ according to the activities the buildings are designed for.
In some points the workshop, drama and observation house differ from eachother, otherways they are similar. Nevertheless, they all belong to a school, which creates a sense of unity as a contrast of the present institution.
