Abbey brewery in Pannonhalma
Spirituality and everyday life, looking into the past and to the future meet in Pannonhalma all together. The town has two faces. The Benedictine side contains spirituality, history and culture, the other side is about the everyday life. The hill of Pannonhalma made a huge distance between the two side, but nowadays, distance started reducing, as the Apátsági Major és Látogatóközpont reopened down in the center. It gave a hopeful future for the tourism in the town and strengthened the benedict presence in the life of the local people. My thesis sthrengthened this contact too.
The brewery and the beerhouse belong to the abbey. The monastic order has a common past with the 3 centuries old brewery so they are connecting to the tradition of brewing.
The planned building is situated between the monastery and the majeure next to the main line of tourism. Brewery and beerhouse are in a comfortable distance on foot for guests as they come out from the majeure. Walking from point A to point B, they can take a closer look at Pannonhalma town center. So they could get closer not just the benedictine milieu but the town too.
The appearance of the building isn’t ostentatious in the built environment, but suitable for the function. My plan contains the following functions: Beerhouse – there is gastronomy which increases the number of the benedict services; Tasting room – it is a new touristic service which containes visiting the brewery; Butcher’s – it serves the local people and the guests too; Brewery – it gives work at least for five people, and this is a new economical expansion in the monastery’s life, which could be a cultural experience for all the people. Regarding to the Hungarian market, the brewery has an optimal capacity, the production could reach 6000 hl/year. The beerhouse can also receive big groups. The atmosphere is better if the weather is shiny or if there is a cultural event (for example a concert) in the beer terrace.
The Pannonhalmi Apátsági Sörfőzde és Sörház is a place where a 300 year old tradition awakenes. It gives new experience for the visitors and gets the town and the monastery closer. The brewery and the beerhouse could be an important touristic point and opportunity for a colourful and enjoyable freetime for people who live in the region.
